Calling for religion and politics to be separate in Fijian society is like telling the sea not to wet the sand. Or us to choose 15’s or 7’s.

Inspiration is something that you find in everything around you. It’s a smile from a loved one that makes you do the dishes, the photo of a stranger that resonates with you because of the emotion you feel or in my case it’s about a young man who I have personally got to know through Twitter and some awesome soirees (Vinaka Twitter Drinks)
Kris Prasad or Kpra as we like to call him is an openly gay Fijian, an activist, president of the USP Drodrolagi movement and a genuinely nice person.
I have gay and lesbian friends, I am what I’d like to think a free thinking liberal Fijian. The circles I mix in have nothing against the LGBT community.
However when I turned up to the USP Drodrolagi Movement’s IDAHOT celebrations where they had a panel discussion, it was plain as day that HOMOPHOBIA is loud and present here in Fiji.
I mean really you’re going to site the extinction of mankind if we all become gay……DUDE there are 7 billion of us on this planet.
I think my favorite quote from the night came from Tessa McKenzie “I don’t understand the fascination that people have with what goes on in the privacy of the bedroom” Loooved that quote coming from this small, frail, old lady.
Another thought provoking statement from McKenzie was that she didn’t think that God would have a problem with two people loving one and another.
When she said that, I thought “Hmmm, if there was a God and I believe there is, I can’t believe that he would have a problem with 2 people wanting to share a life together with love, respect and honor. We’re all humans we should be given the right to love who we want.
I am the eldest of 7 and the youngest brother who is still in primary school is obviously gay. I love him none the less, which is why I’m writing this, to let him know that I’ve got his back no matter what.
Kris talked about being the only gay man in his village and the things he went through as child trying to figure out his identity. I can’t imagine it being an easy thing in fact KUDOS to him for turning out to be the man he is today.
I leave you with these words from the most AWESOMEST man there ever was
“These people who are making a big deal about gay marriage? I don’t give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We’re making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t be making a deal out of … Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want.”

How Common Is Your Birthday?

“Rachel’s the most talented person I’ve ever met, bar none. If anyone’s gonna be a star someday, it’s her. She’d make an excellent contribution to NYADA. You won’t regret it, I promise.”
